Add Elegance to Your Christmas Decor With a Wine Theme

Wine lovers have many options to incorporate some wine related Christmas decorations into their holiday decor. If you are crafty, there are several items that you can make. There are also a great many options in wine Chrismas ornaments, figurines and other wine related decor that you can purchase to add a bit of wine flair to your holiday decor.

For something different than the traditional evergreen wreath, you can buy or make a wreath made from grapevines. A wine themed wreath is a great item for your kitchen, wine room or even your front door. These can end up looking very lovely after being decorated. Try wrapping a string of clear lights around the wreath. There are also different grape light strings that you can use in conjunction with your grapevine wreath. You can use many of the traditional colors and decorations with these wreaths but to add more of a wine look, adorn your wreath with plastic grape clusters, ribbon with vineyard or wine designs, or add some wine corks to the grapevine wreath. As a complement to your grapevine wreath, use grapevine garland as an elegant way of decorating your banister or mantle. A wreath made with wine corks is another great wine related Christmas decoration. Make your own cork wreath with the corks that you have saved from your favorite wineries. If you don't have the time or patience, there are many beautiful cork wreaths available to purchase.

Figurines are very popular Christmas decorations for many homes. You can choose from many different elegant wine figurines that have Santa with wine bottles and glasses to add some flair to your holiday decor. There are several Santa figurines where he is holding wine glasses or bottles and even some that have Santa with a wine barrel. These figurines generally range from ten to thirty inches in height and are great items to decorate the fireplace mantle or hearth or even around wine racks and cellars. If you use nutcrackers as part of your Christmas decorations, there are several nutcrackers with a wine or grape theme. There are even wine related snow globes available to add to your Christmas decor.

The tree is the focal point of any decorated house. Fortunately, there is a wide range of wine ornaments available for your Christmas tree. Whether you want to use wine Christmas ornaments to add to your current tree or if you want to create your own wine themed Christmas tree, there are many ornaments to choose from. Generally, there are two categories of wine Christmas ornaments to pick from; vineyard style ornaments or fun ornaments. Traditional ornaments are ones that utilize grapes, wine bottles, barrels and vineyard designs. Generally, if they have any text, it tends to the homey or inspirational like, "Friends and wine get better with age." There are also whimsical ornaments with comical depictions of Santa Claus or his reindeer with wine and with fun sayings like "You'd be jolly, if you only worked one day a year.". There are also hand painted mini wine glass ornaments that have fun and whimsical images. So depending upon your style, there are many different wine related ornaments to choose from. To light your tree, there are strands of lights that have grapes on them or you can use your existing lights and some large grape cluster lights as an enhancement. Again, if you are crafty, you can find several different designs on the internet for cork ornaments that you can make to add to your Christmas tree or to grapevine wreaths or garland.

Christmas wine stoppers are another great way to add to your holiday decor. Use several wine stoppers in empty wine bottles to create a table centerpiece or use them to decorate a shelf. There are dozens of different types of Christmas wine stoppers including snow-globe stoppers, jingle bell stoppers, Christmas ornament stoppers, and too many to count with either Santa, a snowman or a reindeer. Like the wine ornaments, Christmas wine stoppers have both traditional type stoppers such as blown glass stoppers to whimsical stoppers like a passed out Blitzen.

Use bottle collars or charms as decorations by placing them on either full or empty wine bottles. These hang on or from the neck of the bottle. You can use them alone or in conjunction with a wine stopper. These collars and charms come in a number of different designs like ornament shaped bottle charms that have different messages like "Cheers" or "Eat, Drink and be Merry." There are several bottle collars with Santa, snowman or reindeer motifs as well.

Whether you want to add some wine theme decorations to enhance your current decor or if you want to create an entire wine theme in a particular room or throughout your house, there are a number of wine decorations you can make or buy. You can use all of the different decorations that were mentioned above or select just a few to help create a wine themed Christmas.

How to Decorate your Space with Wall Art

If a room in your house lacks character, by simply placing some fine art prints on the walls can actually make quite an impact. Wall pictures are a necessary accessory in your home and are great to tie in with the room's style and color accent. Before you go off to buy some new pictures for your walls there are a few things you need to plan and decide upon. Here is a quick guide on how to decorate your space with wall art.

Shop for Wall Art by Room

The kind of home you have and the mood, ambience and style of decor you create, should be perfectly designed to suit your lifestyle. Deciding on a style for your room should be determined by the lifestyle you choose and not by what's the latest interior design trend. Whichever room you are wanting to decorate, whether it be your bedroom, living area, kitchen or office space, you need to decide what you want to get out of that space. For example,

  • do you want to hold dinner parties or entertain?
  • do you want a quiet retreat to get away from the hustle and bustle?
  • Is this an area for the kids to play in?
  • Is this a room for your hobby?

Once you have decided what you want to use the room for, you can now choose a color theme to suit the function of the room. For example, mellow greens and neutrals for your 'quiet retreat room', lively yellow for the kids room, or pale tranquil blue for your office space.

So far we have established the function and color of the room in question, this then gives us the basis on choosing the right art prints for the area.

For example:

  • bright colorful cartoon pictures for the kids room
  • mellow pastel floral pictures for your quiet retreat area, or
  • tranquil landscape and scenic pictures for your office space

Choose your Style

Like paint color, artwork can immediately establish or change a room's mood. Not only can it pull the room together, but you can use it to create a style uniquely your own.

  • traditional & classic
  • modern
  • contemporary
  • fun & entertaining
  • casual
  • romantic

The style of the room is totally dependent on your own personal taste and this is the time when you can inject your own personality into the room through artwork and textured accessories.

Suggested art picture styles:

Fun & Entertaining: Pictures can include bright colors both in the print and on the frame. Fun and entertaining pictures can include kittens and puppies, or comedian actors such as the Three Stooges or Laurel & Hardy.

Modern: With the strong black accents in the framed iron-work and the tapestries, striking black and white photos are a natural choice for a modern and sophisticated look.

Calm Retreat: To reinforce the mood of a nestled, cozy retreat, use artwork with neutral, earthy colors and a horizontal landscape subject.

You can even mix and match different styles to create a unique style of your own. For example, frame traditional black and white photo prints in a modern black iron frame.

Arranging and Hanging your Pictures

In order to get the maximum effect of your wall pictures in terms of adding character and a focal point to the room, you need to decide where and how you want to hang them.

Here are some suggestions to help you decide how to get the best effects from your pictures:-

Modern Gallery Look: To create a modern art gallery feel, particularly nice in hallways, lobbies and stairwells, give each piece ample breathing room. Stand at the center of the first piece and take one swift, or two small steps along the wall. This is a good center for the next piece.

Above a Sofa: When placing art above furniture such as a sofa, you need to hang the picture about six to nine inches above the sofa, or at eye level.

Cluster Arrangements: Tightly group an even number of pictures together to give a statement or a focal point. This works on either large or small wall spaces, depending on the look you want.

In a row: By placing an odd number of pictures in a horizontal line to each other gives balance and the sense of space. This works well in hallways or stairwells.

By deciding where and how to hang your pictures, whether it be a tight cluster or a single print above a sofa, you can then determine the size and shape of the pictures you need to buy.

When you have decided on the room's function, color and style, you are in a much better position to go shopping for wall pictures that fit in with the overall theme.

Summary

Wall pictures are an underestimated interior design accessory. This is probably because most people do not know what to do with their pictures in order to get the maximum effect in a room. Before you go hanging up your pictures make sure you plan ahead what you want to get out of that room. Decide on the function, style and color of the room first before you buy your artwork. By doing this you are in a much better position to buy the right type of art picture to fit in with the theme and color accent of your room.

Miniblinds The New! Creative Window Blind Treatment That Will Add The Finishing Touches To Your Window Dcor

Miniblinds the New! Creative window blind treatment that will add the finishing touches to your window décor

For small window blind areas miniblinds would be your best alternative. They come in a wide variety of materials like vinyl, aluminum, wood and PVC plastic. A few of the micromini blind manufacturers would be Graber, Hunter Douglas and Bali. By using miniblinds you will have the ability to use inexpensive window treatments that will fulfill all your micro-miniblinds needs. Miniblinds are very easy to use and work well with other window coverings and blind treatments, and are available in a vast combination of colors. Having aluminum miniblinds installed properly will give you the efficiency of saving energy and protecting you from UV rays along with giving you good sound absorption. When deciding on your miniblinds there is a few things that you should take into consideration as in how the window blind fits into the appearance of your rooms decor or what level of privacy you would require. You may want no light appearing when the blinds are closed or anyone to see in. You could choose a sheer miniblind, which would give you more light during the day but less privacy during the evening hours. Although aluminum miniblinds can be very affordable and practical you should shop around and stay within your budget means. Overall miniblinds would be your less expensive route which can fulfill all your window treatment needs by combining your window blind along with other window treatments like curtains, cornices, swags, valances you can have a very professional finish applied to your window decor that would enlighten any rooms appeal.

Choosing aluminum miniblinds for your home

You'll find a lot of benefits with aluminum blinds. They are made with an attractive appearance and are very durable and can be utilized in just about any room that you would need. The aluminum miniblinds are constructed and built to have a long life span. These window treatments are available in a large selection of colors so that you can find the perfect window blind that will blend well with your homes interior. Aluminum blinds have a beautiful and unique style addition, which will give new life to any homes decor. Being a long-time basic for the office micro blinds and aluminum blinds are moving more into the homes décor more than ever before blending beauty and giving value to your design by offering you privacy and light control. The miniblind may also be referred to as a Venetian blind. These window blinds are designed with the curved slats 1” being as a standard choice for blinds which gives its strength and durability. When you are choosing the micro blinds check the resistance to static, as static electricity will attract more dust. If you're deciding on a bold window blind treatment the 1 3/8 inch aluminum blind will give you all the practicality of a miniblinds. The micro-miniblinds have half-inch slats. The new crisp and clean look of window blinds today is what is going to be around for a long time.

Choosing the right color for your miniblinds

Aluminum miniblinds are a savior for people looking for smaller window treatments. Because they are designed on a smaller scale does not mean they're not attractive, compared to the traditional window blind. Miniblinds have evolved so that you can choose just about any color and type of material that you need for your home decor plans. When choosing a color for your window blinds the first thing is that you should know is what kind of light your room is getting from the outside? As the sun moves the light will change within your room changing the look and appearance of your décor. Even different seasons will give you different light reflections. When the decision for window blinds or shutters is determined best for your room, the first thing to decide is a style and look of the blind. If you have a room that gets its light earlier in the day usually means that you need a warmer color for your blind. If you have a room that benefits from the afternoon or the evening sunset you'll benefit from the reddish light that will come to your windows giving you a warm decorative feeling. If you are looking for some cool light from outside you may choose a brushed aluminum finish that will give a cooling effect on the Windows and the room. Window blind treatments need the same investment and amount of attention as the rest of the furniture in your homes decor to give you balance.

Installing Windows in New Construction

Installing a window in a freshly framed opening is one of the more simple tasks in a construction project.

Most new construction windows have what is called a nailing fin. These are found on vinyl or aluminum clad windows. This nailing fin is either vinyl or metal and has nail holes every 4 to 6 inches and about 1 and 1/2 inches wide. Nailing fins take the place of brick moulding which can still be found on primed wooden windows.

Not only do these fins make installation easier, but also make a better seal against water and air infiltration. These windows can be flashed if desired but not deemed necessary. A window that does not have the benefit of a soffit or porch roof above it may need flashing or a drip edge above it.

When getting ready to install a window, make sure the sheathing is not hanging into the rough opening. This could cut down the size of the opening and not let the window go into the opening. Once this is done, measure the rough opening to make sure the it is big enough for the window. You don't want to lift a heavy window to an opening only to find it won't fit. Rough openings are usually 1" wider and 1/2" taller than the window unit. Rough openings are spect and provided by the window manufacturer.

Depending on the size of the window, you'll need 2 or 3 people to install a window. One or two outside and one inside.

Once you know the window fits, lift it to the opening from the outside. Set it on the sill and push it into the opening until the nail fins hit the wall. Make sure none of the fins folded themselves back into the opening especially the bottom one. The person on the inside then centers the window in the opening. Then using a level, checks it for plumb and level, and applies shims where needed. You may also want to check the window for square, although a window that's closed and in the locked position usually is. The window can now be nailed in. My preference is roofing nails but 8d nails or cap nails will do the job.

If it is a standard jamb (4 9/16) another thing to check is how far it runs past the rough framing. This should be 1/2 inch. You'll also want to make sure the window operates properly. Double hungs should slide up and down easily and casements should crank in and out without hanging up.

The History of Kentucky Coffee Tree

Growing in Eastern and Central North America from New York and Ontario, West to Minnesota and South to Kansas, Tennessee and Oklahoma, the Kentucky coffee tree (Gymnocladus dioicus) is a moderately large canopy tree belonging to the legume family. It is known by several other names, such as American coffee berry, Kentucky mahogany, nicker treet, or stump tree.

The Kentucky coffee tree was pitted against the Tulip Poplar for the distinction of being named Kentucky's state tree. It eventually lost to the Tulip Poplar (also called Yellow Poplar or Tulip Tree) in 1994 but still retained the title of "unofficial Kentucky state tree."

The Kentucky coffee tree is one of the only two remaining species of Gymnocladus still in existence. Its closest relative is in china. Gymnocladus means "naked branches," which the Kentucky coffee tree has six months out of twelve.

The Kentucky coffee tree could reach heights of up to 60 to 100 feet, with its 1-2 feet diameter trunk dividing into several large branches. Its leaves are ovalish and about 2-4 inches long. The largest Kentucky coffee tree on record is found in Morgan County, Kentucky, at a height of 78 feet tall and over 17 1/2 feet in diameter. Usually, a Kentucky coffee tree may live to be about 100 years old.

A legume, the Kentucky coffee tree is actually a flowering plant that produces pods containing seeds that are otherwise edible apart from the toxic substance called cystine that it contains, which is poisonous to humans unless the seeds are roasted thoroughly.

The Kentucky coffee tree got its name because the early North American colonists used to make coffee out of the tree's large seeds. The tree however has no relation whatsoever to the commercial coffee tree. Nevertheless, the Kentucky coffee tree is still considered a good alternative source of coffee.

Only the female Kentucky coffee tree may produce the seed pods, measuring six to ten inches long. These pods usually appear in late summer and sometimes last throughout the whole winter. Inside, the beans are packed in green gooey substance and protected by a hard, dark green-brown shell.

Today, the Kentucky coffee tree is commonly used as a shade tree on larger, ungroomed properties, such as parks, golf courses, and other large areas. The Kentucky coffee tree has also been identified as a close relation of the honeylocust with its furrowed, dark brown bark and large foliage and reputation for being a tough, messy tree.

The Kentucky coffee tree has preference for deep, rich bottomland alluvial soils. They are perfectly suited to urban settings. In addition, the largest specimens can be found mostly in moist hollows on soil made of limestone. However, the plant is tolerant of most soil types. For this reason, the Kentucky coffee tree is highly valued as a hardy tree used for landscaping.
